Building Livelihoods, Ensuring Welfare

The Foundation of Goodness is committed to helping villagers deal with the pressing needs, crises and difficulties that they face in their everyday lives. It is very hard for a family, living on the poverty line, to overcome problems that arise unexpectedly. A sudden drop in income, an accident, a healthcare emergency, a new mouth to feed, education costs or help to start a small enterprise can all prove insurmountable to those who can barely feed their families.

The Foundation of Goodness has always helped village people in their time of need. Since before the tsunami many have been helped, through provision of dry foods, medical costs and equipment for the home or livelihood.

In 2009, the Foundation of Goodness has helped over 70 individuals, several villages, temples and schools.

Assistance has included purchasing milk for children, construction of toilet at the Mallikarama Temple, purchasing medicine for the elderly, donations of grocery packs, supplying water for four households. A public well was constructed in Watugadara Village, and payment was made for the electricity bill of the Seenigama Police Post.

A Volleyball ball was given to G/Millawa Kanitu Vidyalaya Morawaka School, and trophies were given to honour the Thotagamuwa Sports Club.

In March, Foundation of Goodness staff members, Fazana and Thushara, took a lorry load of collected items to the IDP Camps in Manik Farm, to help the displaced people with clothing, food items and hygiene essentials.

Donations also included alms giving to local temples on religious days, and repairs of temple premises as well as emergency house repairs, such as of W. T. Gunawathi’s house roof, which was repaired by kind sponsor Mr. Nimal Wettimuny in June.

Help was also given to disabled soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army, and to the children who lost their fathers in the conflict.

Medical care, surgery costs, medication and eye glasses were gifted to villagers in need. While education equipment was given to Sri Sucharitha Pre School in Baddegama and students received scholarships, educational support and help with the costs of playing sport.

Kushil, Founder and Trustee of the Foundation of Goodness, is passionate about these small projects. He explains that “from a young age I wanted to help the people in the villages who live through such difficult times. I did what I could then, and today am so happy that the Foundation of Goodness is able to continue to help people in small ways that make their lives easier. This is a great gift- to be able to give what is needed with unconditional compassion.”

“We can do no great things,
only small things with great love”
