In Memory of Mr. Candlelight

The Foundation of Goodness is overwhelmed that at the saddest of times, friends and family of Mr. Maurice McPherson thought to commemorate his life through the Foundation of Goodness.

This page is dedicated to the memory of Maurice McPherson, who loved Sri Lanka and whose family and friends have ensured that 300 children and youth will find the light of education to take them to a bright future through a donation of LKR226,592 (US$2000). This will provide English education to the children of Udumulla Village Heartbeat Project in Southern Sri Lanka for 20010/11 as part of the Foundation of Goodness’ ongoing work to help rural villagers tackle poverty through productive activities.

The Foundation of Goodness has received similar donations, such as the Jamison family who contributed to the betterment of preschool education facilities in memory of their beautiful daughter Kumari. Likewise, others have supported us in celebration of their engagement or wedding, and may these kind acts inspire others to support charities of their choice at the greatest moments in their r lives for a better world.

On behalf of everyone at the Foundation of Goodness, Kushil, Founder & Trustee wishes the highest blessings of peace and happiness to all those who knew Maurice. “This kindness is received with our heartfelt gratitude which is hugely praiseworthy and a fitting memorial for a man who cared so much for Sri Lanka during his lifetime. May lots of merit be bestowed upon him from this noble undertaking initiated by those who loved him.”

Maurice McPherson (11 June 1948 - 26 January 2010)

To his family he was beloved son, brother, cousin, wife and father. To friends and colleagues he was Maurice/Mac/ Mr Maurice/ Mr Candlelight, an unforgettable, larger than life, proud, generous person who touched the lives of many people.

Maurice worked in Sri Lanka from 2001 – 2003. He was delighted by its people whether at work or on the Royal Colombo Golf Course where he spent so many happy hours, both on and off the elegant terrace! He loved the beauty of the tea plantations and the spectacular beaches and he admired the Sri Lankan passion for cricket, a game he had loved since childhood. He was immensely proud of the enclosed newspaper article!

"Then came the magnificent Maurice McPherson affectionately referred to as Mr Candlelight. His whole system was shattered and he refused to believe his eyes when his tee shot on the 9th settled 60 inches from the pin. He collected a very special award getting closest to the pin and beating over a century of competitors. To add further glory he had 2 birdies in his round which gave him and the family visiting immense pleasure."

- THE SUNDAY TIMES, SUNDAY, JULY 21, 2002,     COLOMBO.

Above all he cared for the conditions of his employees as he has always done wherever in the world he has worked. He believed in education as a means of improving people’s lives. He thought of each person and tried to advise each one individually.

This is why we believe he will have been very happy to support this Charity and this project in order to support children’s development and better prepare them for the future through education. Maurice/Mac showed compassion to people no matter what their status, always on a personal level. He had a big heart and was persistent in his desire to improve the lot of everyone.

We will always remember him for his love for us and the unreserved commitment of time and energy he gave us. He has enhanced our lives and that of many others. We give thanks for his life.

In loving memory,
Hilary, Jean and Allan
