Graduation & Annual Concert 2010,
Village Heartbeat Project, Udumulla

The graduation of students of computer training, English classes, cookery classes and patch-work classes along with the annual concert of the Village Heartbeat Project in Udumulla was held on 8 January 2011.

The chief guest on this occasion was Mr. Ajith Weerasinghe, who recently was chosen the ‘Mega Star” on one of the Sri Lankan television networks. It was a memorable day in Udumulla, a poor village just beyond Seenigama, when a television star came to visit their village.

After their arrival, the guests lighted the traditional oil lamp which was yet again this year was a novel creation by some of the members of the Children’s Goodness Club. The concert began with a traditional southern dance to welcome the guests.

The students of the English language classes showed their prowess by giving short speeches in English on subjects such as ‘good manners’ and ‘conservation of the environment’. Notably, the vote of thanks was also delivered in English by a student.

There were a number of dances performances performed by the girls to traditional music as well as to western music. Their colourful costumes coupled with graceful and rhythmic body movements did not fail to captivate the audience. The audience in turn gave the performers all the encouragement needed by showing their appreciation by lots of cheers and applause.

The important event of the day was the presentation of certificates to the graduating students.

The members of the patchwork class exhibited their handiwork at the Centre. There were many colourful hand bags, cushion covers and wall hangings on display.

The members of the cookery class provided the food for the ‘Sangrahaya ‘ that was laid out and enjoyed by the guests. All in all it was a very memorable occasion for the inhabitants of Udumulla and its surrounding villages.
