Community aid takes centre stage at the Foundation of Goodness

This week, the Foundation of Goodness has decided to highlight the act of community aid in the village of Seenigama. The staff at the MCC Centre of Excellence has taken it upon themselves to make community aid a regular activity amongst the villagers and children. Not just in Seenigama but in other surrounding areas as well. Fine examples would be planting trees, cleaning an elder’s home, village temple and providing them with a meal or organizing a beach clean up to ensure that the beach is free of waste and pollution.

Other examples include collecting funds to purchase dry rations for a family, electricity and water sponsorships or for an elderly citizen to get an eye surgery done. MCC staff members also provide their expertise in mental and physical health for people who require it in addition to visiting orphanages and supporting them.

There are other organizations who wish to be a part of the FoG community aid programme, for example, the Treasury and Cash and Payments Departments of HSBC visited the village to take part in a beach clean up, to plant trees and to paint the classrooms of the village school. Similarly, Oriflame Sri Lanka conducted a workshop at the MCC Centre in November 2011 for the 52 students following the Beauty Culture course. They were taught to apply the correct shade of makeup for different types of skin colour. In addition to conducting this one of a kind workshop, Oriflame Sri Lanka sponsored a fun treat for 65 preschool students and donated stationery.

Inculcating the spirit of goodness and the act of giving back to people, young citizens also contribute to FoG’s community aid project. Students from the Elizabeth Moir School and Asian International School have done beach clean ups in addition to organizing an interactive sing-a-long session with members of the Children’s Goodness Club.

On November 18 and 19, Microsoft conducted a huge programme for 600 children, youth and women. They covered areas of leadership training, how to face an interview effectively and to prepare a CV in the correct manner, quality control in completing a garment, correct ways to use microwave, oven and toaster with the assistance from SINGER. Microsoft also conducted a workshop on "How to make the best use of new Word applications" and an outdoor team building activity as the grand finale. They also gifted new software and equipment for the Lahiru preschool. They sponsored beverages, snacks and lunch for all the participants in all the workshops they conducted.

On November 30, 214 elderly citizens attended a medical and eye camp conducted by HelpAge Sri Lanka. They were from Seenigama and surrounding villages. The patients were provided with spectacles and if necessary, they will be provided with cataract operations free of charge.

Community aid plays a major role in the Foundation of Goodness and there are several such beneficiaries from their countless projects.
