Sinhala and Tamil New Year Brings Seenigama Together

Seenigama was again alive with spirit over the "Avurudu" period, from Thursday 14 to Sunday 17 April.
At a time when there has not been much to smile about, the village obviously loved the festivities which encompassed absolutely every age group in the village.
The Village Management Committee was responsible for organizing the activities and our sincere thanks goes to them. We would also like to specifically thank the many special people who assisted with judging the competitions and getting involved. Percy, the famous Sri Lankan flag bearer was terrific at getting the crowd involved in the games. In addition Gayathri the horoscope reader, Nirda Uyanhewa the tele-drama actress and Shanaka de Silva the well known singer and actor provided a real thrill to the villagers as the judges of the various beauty contests.
The games were in traditional Avrudhak style, they included pillow fights, grease pole climbing, volleyball, cricket, tug-of-war, cycle races, swimming, weaving, coconut scraping, pin the elephants eye, balloon blowing, bun eating, laughing contests, dress up competitions and so many more. Throughout the official events there was music, dancing and clapping by the spirited people.
The events culminated on Sunday evening with the presentation of prizes and the beauty contests for un-married and married men and women, children and the elderly. The crowd certainly got behind these events and the whole show was professionally presented on a lit stage! The atmosphere was electric; we believe the entire village came to the celebrations which was such a lovely thing at this otherwise difficult time. |
