In order to thank the village and surrounding area for taking pride in the way they look, we have run a few competitions to offer added incentive for people to keep things looking tidy and beautiful. Since July we have run a monthly 'Best Kept House and Garden' competition for all the recently built houses in the village. We have also run an art competition in Seenigama School where pupils have decorated the wall with some quite stunning and thought provoking pictures.
Best Kept House and Garden
This has been an incredibly tough competition to judge! So many of the villagers' new homes are taken care of beautifully - painted different colours, different styles, different patterns, with wonderfully kept gardens, fences, ponds, etc.. It was a tough job for volunteers Jill, Nick, Shane, Cynthia, Faye and Catherine to pick out a winner for each of the months of July, August and September.
Before mentioning the winners, however we should also mention the amazing donors who made the houses possible, without their help, humanity and generosity we would not have such wonderful houses in the village.
July's winner was D Sumathipala. Contribution to the house made by Emory United Methodist Church, Maryland, USA.
August's winner was M Sisira Kumara. The house was donated by Disaster Relief Fund (Gabriel & Krishanthi Lucian).
September's winner was L D Malani¬. The house was donated by Mr. Desmond Wijenayake.
We will publish the results of the competition every 3 months with pictures of the deserving winners.
Seenigama School Art Competition

Mondo Challenge of the UK generously funded the building of the Tsunami destroyed wall at the Sri Wimala Buddhi School at Seenigama.
Rather than having a plain wall we ran a competition giving the students the opportunity to turn the wall into an artwork. This competition was sponsored by The Rotary Club of Reconnections in conjunction with CIC Paints.
We had ten very creative entries from students aged 7 to 17 all with varying themes such as cultural events, village rebuilding, ethnic harmony etc.. All were of great quality in art itself and also in the topics depicted. The decision for three judges was difficult! Although we had to award first, second and third places we feel it unfair to list these as all the pictures were of excellent standard, and the entrants were given prizes for their outstanding participation. |
