On 26th December 2024, the Foundation of Goodness marked the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, a devastating tragedy that claimed thousands of lives and left an indelible mark on Sri Lanka and the world. This solemn day was observed across all our Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centres, where staff, beneficiaries, and community members came together to honour the memory of those lost and to reflect on the resilience and recovery of affected communities over the past two decades.
In Seenigama, where the Foundation of Goodness began its transformative journey, the commemoration programme was held at the Seenigama Kusumarama Temple. The event, led by Rev. Akurala Manjulathissa, included 32 offerings made in honour of those who perished in the tsunami. A two-minute silence was observed to pay tribute to the lives lost, allowing attendees a moment of reflection and remembrance.

The Children’s Goodness Club in Seenigama embodied the spirit of kindness and community by distributing dry ration packs to two low-income families. This act of generosity served as a poignant reminder of the importance of extending a helping hand to those in need, continuing the Foundation’s mission to uplift and empower vulnerable communities.

The tsunami’s impact on Seenigama was profound, with the village experiencing extensive devastation. Over the past 20 years, the Foundation of Goodness has been at the forefront of rebuilding efforts, transforming Seenigama into a beacon of hope and resilience. This year’s commemoration reaffirmed our commitment to supporting those in need, fostering unity, and bridging the urban-rural divide.
As we reflect on this solemn anniversary, we stand united in honouring the memory of those who were lost and renewing our resolve to create a brighter future for all.
