In an inspiring display of international sporting camaraderie, 30 aspiring young female cricketers from the Foundation of Goodness had the rare opportunity to meet and interact with the New Zealand National Women’s Cricket Team at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on 13th October 2025. The group, comprising 15 girls from the North and 15 from the South, represented a new generation of rural Sri Lankan talent whose passion for cricket transcends geographical and social barriers.
The event, graced by the New Zealand High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, brought together two worlds, global sporting excellence and grassroots aspiration. The young players were warmly welcomed by the New Zealand squad, who shared words of encouragement and presented each girl with a signed cricket bat and team T-shirt, tokens that will undoubtedly serve as lifelong reminders of this unforgettable encounter.

For many of the girls, it was the first time stepping into such a professional sporting environment. Watching the New Zealand women’s team train, witnessing their discipline, precision and teamwork up close, proved to be an invaluable experience. It offered a glimpse into what can be achieved through dedication and perseverance.
The day was made possible thanks to the generous support of the New Zealand High Commission, which covered all transport, accommodation, meals and refreshments for the participants. The southern group joined the programme in Colombo for the day, while the northern contingent, having travelled a long distance, was provided with overnight accommodation and meals.

Cricket has long been a unifying force in Sri Lanka, capable of bridging divides and fostering hope. For these 30 young girls from distant rural communities, the chance to meet an international team was not just a day of sport but a moment of empowerment. It reaffirmed the Foundation of Goodness’ mission to create equal opportunities for all, helping to bridge the urban–rural divide and nurture talent wherever it exists.
