Nurturing Knowledge, Skills and Wellbeing: September Workshops Across Our Centres

Throughout September 2025, our islandwide network of centres delivered a rich series of workshops designed to inspire, educate and empower learners of all ages. From life skills and health awareness to creative learning and specialist training, each programme reflected our commitment to holistic development and community wellbeing.

Life Skills and Responsibility Workshops

Several Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centres hosted Life Skills and Awareness sessions, with each workshop tailored to help children understand their responsibilities towards themselves, their families and the wider community.
At Monaragala, Mahiyanganaya, Hatton and Rathgama, facilitators emphasised the value of education, the importance of teamwork and the role of young people as active contributors to society. Sessions included engaging activities such as dramas on responsibility, practical examples of character building and discussions on independence, earning a livelihood and supporting one’s family. Students responded with enthusiasm, sharing their own thoughts and participating actively throughout.

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy for Elders

On 21st August, the Centre of Excellence commenced its first Cognitive Stimulation Therapy session in partnership with the Lanka Alzheimer’s Foundation. Seven elders took part in a series of thoughtfully designed activities, including memory exercises, reading, games, music therapy and group discussions. This 14-week programme aims to slow cognitive decline, enhance wellbeing and equip our team with valuable training, while offering meaningful connection and joy to the senior participants.

Good Life Centre – Healthy Food Cookery Session

At the Kahawa Good Life Centre, students took part in a practical cookery session exploring the theme of healthy eating. Volunteers and the CPU team guided participants through the benefits of nutritious food, touching on physical and mental health, immunity and digestion. With 19 students in attendance, the session encouraged healthy habits that support long-term wellbeing.

Health and Hygiene Awareness for Children

Two centres conducted important health screenings for young learners this month.
At Lahiru Preschool and the Finding Dreams Unit, children underwent checks of their oral health, ears, skin and personal hygiene. They were also taught simple, everyday routines to keep themselves clean and healthy. These workshops ensured early awareness and helped children understand the importance of self-care.

Cookery Workshop – Centre of Excellence

A special session on new recipes was conducted by Thilani Withanage of “Thilaa’s Kitchen”, supported by Senani Senanayake. Cookery students spent the afternoon learning five different dishes, gaining both skills and confidence. We extend our thanks to Worldview Sri Lanka for sponsoring Thilani’s transport for this event.

Wildlife Photography Workshop

The Centre of Excellence also welcomed photographer Amanda Weerasinghe for a Wildlife Photography Workshop on 25th September. Thirty-two students attended a detailed presentation on composition, technique and creative observation. Amanda reviewed each student’s photographs individually, offering personalised feedback that the participants found both inspiring and insightful.

Why English Matters – Vavuniya Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centre

At the Vavuniya VHE Centre, 43 students joined a session on the importance of learning English. The presentation explored how language skills open doors to education, global communication and future employment. Students engaged attentively, gaining a clearer understanding of how English can shape their opportunities.

Ahangama Women’s Health Workshop

On 12th September, the Ahangama Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centre hosted a Women’s Health Workshop attended by 70 women and schoolgirls. The session covered menstrual health, hygiene practices, healthy lifestyles and stigma reduction. Reusable sanitary kits were distributed, along with guidance on their use. The workshop created a safe space for open conversation and shared learning, helping women carry this knowledge back into their families and communities.
