Restoring Voices of Life: Hearing Aid Campaign Brings Hope to Elders

On 15th August 2025, the Foundation of Goodness, in collaboration with the Ratmalana Audiology Centre, successfully conducted a life-changing Hearing Aid Campaign at the Centre of Excellence in Seenigama. Running from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m., the programme reached 64 participants, many of whom were elders struggling with untreated hearing loss, an invisible condition that affects communication, independence and overall quality of life.

A dedicated team of three audiologists, Bandini Jayasena, Anjali De Silva and Subhani Fonseka volunteered their expertise and services throughout the day. Their generosity went beyond time and effort, as they also donated 30 hearing aids valued at Rs. 60,000 each, amounting to Rs. 840,000 in total. Based on careful assessments, 14 devices were distributed to those in urgent need, while others were guided to appropriate medical interventions before becoming eligible for fitting.

The campaign had three clear objectives: to identify and address hearing difficulties, particularly among elders, to provide hearing aids to those in need and to raise awareness on hearing health, emphasising the importance of early intervention. To achieve this, participants underwent hearing check-ups and needs assessments, received demonstrations on the proper use and care of devices and were referred to ENT specialists where further treatment was required. Twelve individuals were identified for specialist care, while one elder was found to need an ultra-power hearing aid, which will be arranged through follow-up support.

Globally, the World Health Organisation estimates that over 430 million people live with disabling hearing loss, the majority of whom reside in low and middle-income countries where access to treatment is limited. Left unaddressed, hearing loss can lead to social isolation, depression and a decline in cognitive health. Within this context, initiatives such as this campaign carry profound importance, enabling elders to reconnect with loved ones, participate more fully in community life and regain a sense of dignity.

The response from beneficiaries was overwhelmingly positive. Many elders expressed deep gratitude, sharing how the hearing aids would transform their daily lives from enjoying conversations with family to engaging in community gatherings without the constant struggle to hear. They also praised the audiologists for their professionalism, warmth and the clarity of their guidance, which gave them confidence in managing and maintaining their new devices.

The Foundation of Goodness remains committed to following up on referrals, ensuring that those who need medical care receive it and that recipients of hearing aids are supported in their ongoing use. Moving forward, we look to strengthen our partnership with the Ratmalana Audiology Centre to deliver similar initiatives in the future, while continuing to encourage the community to prioritise regular hearing check-ups.

This campaign stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through compassion and collaboration, restoring hearing but also connection, confidence and quality of life for those most in need.
