For many elders, life can feel isolating, with days blending into one another and little interaction beyond their immediate surroundings. At the Foundation of Goodness, we aim to change that through our monthly visits to the Balapitiya Elders’ Home, offering companionship, care and meaningful activities that brighten their lives.
During our recent visits, we attended to the medical, physical and emotional needs of the residents. Dr. Shirley conducted blood pressure and heart rate checks for 18 to 19 elders each session, providing personalised advice and referring a few to Balapitiya Hospital for further care. Physiotherapy and gentle walking exercises alongside counselling sessions, offered emotional support and guidance, with bedside visits to the less mobile residents, ensuring no one is left unnoticed.
The activities we bring go beyond health checks. Art therapy has been a highlight, allowing elders to express themselves creatively, even for those living with dementia or visual impairment, two blind residents recently joined in by drawing on blank paper. Music therapy, including singing, instrument playing and dancing, brings joy and encourages social interaction.
Educational and spiritual materials are also shared during our visits. Leaflets on anger management and oral health programmes provide guidance and engage residents in meaningful discussions. The sessions are enjoyable and also strengthen cognitive functions, concentration and motor skills.
Each visit reminds us of the profound impact these interactions have. The elders eagerly anticipate our monthly visits and their smiles, stories and gratitude are testament to the difference a few hours of attention and care can make. Thanks to the dedication of our team and volunteers and the generous support of our donors, we continue to nurture hope, companionship and well-being among our elders, many of whom would otherwise spend much of their time alone.
These visits are more than programmes, they are a lifeline, a celebration of connection and a reminder that every elder deserves to feel seen, supported and cherished.
