From Southern Roots to Sri Lanka ‘A’ Women’s Cricket

Eight young women cricketers who have had their talent nurtured through the Foundation of Goodness cricket development programs in the South are now representing the Sri Lanka ‘A’ Team in the ongoing series against New Zealand ‘A’, marking a proud milestone in their journey from rural school cricket in the Southern Province to the National ‘A’ Team.

Their progress reflects a combination of structured support through school cricket coaching, provisions for necessary equipment, and long-term mentoring under the Foundation of Goodness, along with their own dedication, discipline, and continued commitment to improving their game. With access to consistent training environments and skill development opportunities, these young cricketers from the Galle and Matara Districts have steadily worked towards higher levels of the sport.

This success also reflects the continued strength of Devapathiraja Girls College in Rathgama, with five players from the school earning selection to the Sri Lanka ‘A’ setup, further highlighting the institution’s growing contribution to women’s/Girls cricket and the strong talent pipeline emerging from the Southern Province.

Among them, Sanjana Kavindi has made a strong impact with the bat, scoring a fluent 79 in the ODI series and following it up with a composed 45 in an earlier match against the same opposition, reflecting her growing confidence at higher levels of the game.

Wicketkeeper Sumudu Nisansala has been a steady presence in the Sri Lanka ‘A’ setup, maintaining consistency and composure behind the stumps throughout the series.

With the ball, Tharuka Shehani has played an important role, taking key wickets and providing control during crucial phases of play.

Rashmika Sewwandi continues to develop within the Sri Lanka ‘A’ environment, reflecting the steady emergence of talent through the same Southern Province pathway.

Furthermore 06 Girls from Devapathiraja Girls College Rathgama, was selected into the Sri Lanka U 19 Girls squad and toured Australia and represented SL at the Asia Cup.

Their journey stands as a reflection of what can be achieved when opportunity, structure, and personal commitment come together in the right environment and yet another milestone for women in sport- an area that is often overlooked and under-resourced but holds immense potential for greatness.
