25th Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Plant Opens in Kurukottekanda

Access to safe drinking water remains a pressing challenge in rural Sri Lanka, especially in regions where water sources are either contaminated or unreliable. Many communities are still forced to depend on untreated groundwater, placing them at significant risk of waterborne illnesses and chronic kidney diseases, such as CKDu, which is prevalent across several provinces.

On 5th June 2025, the Foundation of Goodness marked a significant milestone with the launch of our 25th Reverse Osmosis Water Purification (RO) Plant, located in Kurukottekanda, Morawaka (Matara). This achievement has been made possible thanks to the continued generosity and compassion of Murtaza and Avanti Esufally, whose steadfast support has brought clean water within reach for countless families over multiple projects.

A Lifeline for the Community

Kurukottekanda, a small rural village tucked away in the Matara District, is home to 20 families, with a total of 80 residents. Like many villages in the area, the community had long struggled with limited access to clean drinking water. Prior to this intervention, residents depended on shallow wells and surface water sources, often shared with livestock and were vulnerable to contamination during the rainy season.

For many families, this meant long daily walks to fetch water from distant sources and constant concerns about the safety of what they consumed. With just one village served, this new RO plant may seem small in scale, but the impact on the quality of life for its 80 beneficiaries is truly transformational.

Technical Support for Sustainable Impact

Valued at Rs. 2,200,000, this project marks a meaningful investment in the health and well-being of the Kurukottekanda community.

A reliable clean water supply brings immediate and long-term benefits: fewer cases of waterborne disease, better hygiene, improved school attendance and greater peace of mind for families, particularly for children and the elderly who are more vulnerable to illness.

Clean Water: A Foundation for a Healthier Future

According to data from WHO and UNICEF, nearly 1 in 3 people globally still lack access to safe drinking water. In Sri Lanka, the challenge is more than just scarcity; it’s the quality of water that often poses a hidden danger. High levels of fluoride, nitrates and other contaminants have been linked to an increase in chronic kidney conditions in rural populations.

This is why interventions like RO plants are more than just infrastructure projects, they’re lifesaving solutions. Each plant installed by the Foundation of Goodness directly tackles these risks, offering a practical and sustainable means of protecting rural communities from preventable illness.

Gratitude for a Meaningful Partnership

We are deeply grateful to Murtaza and Avanti Esufally, whose unwavering support continues to pave the way for healthier, more dignified living conditions across the island. Their commitment to uplifting underserved communities exemplifies the kind of long-term vision and compassion that leads to lasting change.

As we celebrate the installation of our 25th RO plant, we are reminded that every drop of clean water carries the potential to change lives. Together with dedicated partners and supporters, we look forward to reaching even more communities in the years to come.
