The Foundation of Goodness is immensely proud to welcome on board world No. 1 in men’s javelin throw, Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, as a Goodness Ambassador. The honour was bestowed upon him during a visit to the Centre of Excellence in Seenigmaa when Rumesh declared open the Sports Museum at the Foundation of Goodness where his damaged javelins are now on display.
At just 23 years of age, Rumesh has established himself among the world’s leading javelin athletes, reaching the World No. 1 ranking in 2026. His outstanding 92.62-metre throw at the Rome Diamond League marked a landmark achievement for Sri Lankan athletics, bringing international recognition to the country’s sporting talent.
The javelins were damaged during air travel as Rumesh returned from the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest. He gifted them during a special felicitation ceremony held at Seenigama on 9th October 2026, allowing a piece of his sporting journey to be preserved for visitors to the Centre of Excellence. The Sports Gallery also features memorabilia from celebrated sporting figures, including Foundation of Goodness Trustee and legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Muthiah Muralitharan, alongside other renowned cricketers and international personalities.
The occasion also marked Rumesh’s formal welcome on board as a Goodness Ambassador. In this role, he has pledged to work alongside the Foundation of Goodness to help identify, encourage and develop talented young athletes from rural Sri Lanka, creating greater opportunities for them to pursue their sporting ambitions.
We are immensely proud to have Rumesh join the Foundation of Goodness family. His journey to the top of his discipline reflects the dedication and determination required to excel at the highest level, while his commitment to encouraging emerging athletes aligns with our belief that talent and opportunity should not be limited by geography or circumstance.
As his javelins take their place at the Sports Gallery in Seenigama, they become a lasting reminder of what Sri Lankan athletes can achieve and the possibilities that open up when talent is nurtured. We look forward to working with Rumesh to inspire the next generation of rural athletes to discover their potential, pursue their ambitions and reach for new heights.
