On 5 September 2026, a team of dedicated volunteers from the National Youth Services Council conducted a one-day Leadership camp in Seenigama for 50 children from the Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centres in Akurala, Kahawa, Seenigama, Udumulla and Rathgama.
Bringing together children between the ages of 12 and 17, the programme offered an engaging, activity-based learning experience centred on Leadership, Capacity Building, Skill Development, Team Building, Good Values and Problem Solving. The programme was led by Sameera Sandun Kumara, Janith Thenuka, Mihila Gunasekara, and Chathuranga Gamage,who generously volunteered their time and expertise for the benefit of the children.
Through interactive sessions, practical exercises and team activities, the facilitators encouraged the children to recognise their strengths, work with others and approach challenges with creativity and responsibility.
The children participated enthusiastically throughout the day, while also enjoying the opportunity to meet children from other Centres, form new friendships and learn the importance of cooperation and mutual respect.
The dedication of the volunteer trainers was central to the success of the programme. By giving their time, energy and expertise, they created an enriching experience that went beyond the planned activities, offering the children valuable guidance, encouragement and a chance to learn from positive role models. Their willingness to invest in the younger generation made the day both purposeful and memorable for the children.
The programme left the children with new experiences, practical skills and lasting memories, while encouraging them to recognise their own potential and grow into responsible and capable young individuals who can make a positive contribution to their communities.
